In tablet manufacturing, powdered raw materials mixed in a blender are accumulated in containers or hoppers and then supplied to the tablet press. However, many fine powders are prone to bridging and segregation, which has been a significant concern for large pharmaceutical companies operating globally. This article introduces a case where AirSweep has solved such issues. ■Problem The occurrence of bridging affects quality At a certain pharmaceutical manufacturer, during the production of the over-the-counter drug acetaminophen, the mixed powdered raw materials were bridging within the hopper. This not only led to production delays but also caused the collapse of the bridge, resulting in a sudden flow of powder that overflowed and affected downstream processes, making cleaning very challenging. Furthermore, the instability in raw material supply compromised product uniformity and quality, potentially leading to costly product recalls, lowering the drug's evaluation, and posing risks to product safety. Many of the raw materials handled in the food industry contain high levels of oil and moisture, leading to frequent issues of bridging, adhesion, and clogging. Raw materials with poor flow tend to stagnate, affecting productivity, compromising product quality, and potentially causing contamination from different batches of raw materials. Companies that manufacture baked goods such as gluten-free muffins and brownies were also troubled by such issues. **Problem:** Waste of time, labor, and materials due to sticking This company used a suction transport system with a processing capacity of 2,700 kg/h to distribute raw materials to two receivers. The combination of oil content in flax and the oil and fat content in cocoa resulted in poor flowability of both materials, causing the raw materials to not only bridge at the outlet but also adhere to the inner walls of the receiver, blocking the interior until reaching the filter bag. This led to production delays and significant losses due to waste. Approximately 20 kg of waste had to be manually removed each day, incurring additional disposal costs.
